(sixth draft) (mystery project)

Busy busy busy

The new project took a sharp left turn in early December. In its new configuration, it’s maybe only two-thirds as difficult and complex, and our time frames are a bit more flexible. In theory, we should have tons of extra time, energy, and headspace to focus on other things, like my book. In practice, we’re still reeling from our earlier intense push, and we’re just focused on making a little progress each day as we recover. Between that, figuring out the new requirements and logistics, and the shorter, darker days, writing has taken a complete back seat.

Sometimes days pass where I don’t touch or think about the book at all. On those days where I do get around to it, it’s not unusual for me to only add a few sentences or amend the outline for a single idea. I miss writing, spending hours of every day disappearing into that other world in my head, hanging out with those fictional characters, brainstorming ways to make their choices even more agonizing, their situations even more perilous.

I’m hoping there’s a break in the most time-, energy-, and headspace-intensive tasks by spring of next year, and I’m able to dive back into the sixth draft. Hopefully I’ll be able to regain my momentum, with the perspective that time away from the manuscript can provide.
