Just a little more than a year after completing the first draft. A few days, or a couple months, or 8+ months overdue, depending on which of my soft deadlines you go by.
As usual, I found the final climactic scenes of the third POV slower going than the middle scenes, mainly because it’s easier to tell when it’s not working. I rewrote and re-outlined a couple scenes and wrote slower than I wanted to. But somehow I wrote three scenes on each of my flights round-trip… in the airport and on the plane. I think scrawling them by hand helped.
I have big plans for Draft 3. I need to make sure I don’t tackle too much at once, or this will be another slow draft. But given the major leap in the quality of the prose, characterization, and story between Draft 1 and Draft 2.5, and given the vast improvement I see in each of the first scenes I’ve rewritten already, I’m excited to see how this next draft ends up.
